Welcome to the last day of our six day blow-out!  This is one day only so make sure you enter now and enter fast, because time is running out!

And what is our last day? Pre-ordered books! Sometimes you just need the paperback, and you really want to have it on release day, but living in the middle of nowhere can make that a pain.  I hate forgetting that a new book is coming only to find Tuesday rolling around and realize I forgot to make plans to make the harrowing trek to the big city and everyone is reading without me!

That’s why I love to pre-order books.  No remembering about release dates, my money is off and I get to be happy when I open the door on release day and the UPS man is handing over the goods.  My UPS man visits a few times a week with packages to keep me going, and next week I want to send a friendly postal or UPS worker to you!

One of the things to consider before moving to the middle of nowhere is that there isn’t much in the way of fast food, and even less in the way of yummy restaurants that will deliver to your isolated ass.

People in Red Rock have to cook for just this reason. (Except for Cindy,who works the country doctor thing hardcore. Her patients pay her with food all the time.) The first step, if you don’t know how to cook, is to find yourself someone to do it for you…or a cookbook.

I recommend The Pioneer Woman Cooks by Ree Drummond. Some of you may be familiar with her website, where she discusses the trials and travails of living in the middle of nowhere with a cowboy, a bunch of kids, and various and sundry animals, including a butt-ton of cattle.

Or you could be familiar with her recipes. My own husband has learned to spot a Pioneer Woman dish before it even hits the table. He hovers, waiting for his opportunity to sneak a taste or five. And then he’s in heaven.

Why? Because her food is simple, and it’s damn good. Which is why I went into a bit of a foodie ecstasy when I found out she had a cookbook coming out on October 27th. I preordered my copy immediately, and now I’ve done the same for you.

Those of you who follow either of us on twitter (@donnajherren or @moirarogersbree)  may already know this story, but for those of you new to the adventures of the ladies Moira Rogers, I will tell the abridged version here.

Donna, as it happens, has a pet pig.  Only she didn’t buy this pig or acquire it in any normal way.  It actually wandered up to her house and sort of decided to stay.  This was documented on twitter:

That’s right.  A random pig wandered up to her house, because that’s the sort of thing that happens sometimes when you live in the middle of nowhere. You get random pigs, and other animals even more alarming.

That’s why you need weapons!  Okay, wait, disclaimers up front: please do not try to go out and do battle with fierce creatures with the knife featured to the right, because that might actually be not all that much smaller than the knife itself.  (Also it does not come with a chain, but is easily mounted on one!)  However, what it is good for is stealth weaponry.  It’s decorative!  (I was going to say stylish, but maybe that’s a limb I’d rather not get out on.)

Of course, those who live in Red Rock Pass don’t worry quite as much about the wild pigs, since werewolves have probably got that covered.  But that doesn’t mean Joe goes anywhere without his arsenal, as Dylan finds out much to his dismay in Sanctuary’s Price.  (Really. Who drives around with C4 in the back of their blazer?  Oh yeah, Joe.)

Since the knife might not be enough to drive off any wild animals that wander up to you, we’re also throwing in this signed copy of Last Hope.  If you really are in danger, it would do more damage than an ebook if you threw it really, really hard.  Just don’t throw it at anyone who’s going to sue us later, okay?

Welcome to Day Two of our continuing “Middle of Nowhere” fiesta, celebrating all places impossibly remote and the ways you survive living there.

What is our item for Day Two?  Movies, of course.  Now, if you’re like me and Donna, living in the middle of nowhere makes renting movies a bit of a drag.  First you have to drive to the video rental place.  Then you have to rent movies and bring them home.  Then you forget to watch them, incur late fees, drive all the way back to return them, and wonder why you didn’t just pay Amazon to own them because it would have been cheaper than the gas.

Of course, that’s why the world invented: Netflix.  Oh Netflix, you are beautiful with your endless movies in our mailboxes, your streaming video and your utter lack of late fees.  So we both get lots of chances to watch movies.

Favorite movies can tell you a lot about a person.  Or a character.  So for our second day of fun, about about a peek at the movie queues of all the characters in Red Rock Pass?

…okay, so the guys born in the late 19th century aren’t quite as down with the movies.  In Adam’s defense, he has been living in a cabin without much electricity since the 40s.  Gavin, however, is just a crotchety old bugger.

That’s right! If you’re going to live in the middle of nowhere, you need ebooks! You know why you need ebooks? Because you’re in the middle of nowhere and man, it is a pain in the ass to go trucking off to the neighborhood bookstore every time you get a craving for a book. Your neighborhood bookstore could be an hour away, and while I advocate reading, that’s a two hour round trip you could be using to read! Obviously instant gratification is the way to go.

Red Rock is in the middle of nowhere. What sucks the most about their town, though, (aside from the fact that people are always gettin’ all up in there trying to kill you) is that the human world has a tendency to forget they’re even there, thanks to all the spells.

A healthy amount of cash keeps the power going and the phone lines running in and out, but Sam and Gavin, Red Rock’s intrepid alphas, were born in a time before easy internet access. Most of the time they don’t entirely understand why dial-up isn’t perfectly sufficient for all of Red Rock’s internet needs.

(Of course, if you really need to download something fast, you can always go to Keith’s place. Just don’t spread that around, it’s a little bit illegal.)
