For those of you who may not know about the series, we recently reissued them with new covers at a reduced price.  Each story is a stand alone erotic story about a paranormal character with a supernatural sex problem meeting the person who can help them fix it.  They’re short, they’re dirty, they’re occasionally campy, but they’re always edged with a little bit of romance and end happily-for-now.

So if you’d like to try something short, sweet & spicy, have a free taste.

I have been crazy excited about the fact that we get to give away as many copies of Cry Sanctuary as people can download over the next two weeks.  My husband is tired of listening to me cheer about it, that’s for sure.  I have talked before about how I believe so, so hard in the power of free, and that it can come back to you.  That giving a book away can be the best advertising there is in the long run.

And yet, there are so many people who disagree with this, or don’t get it.  One thing I hear over and over again as I talk about this with people is the same question: Why are you giving your book away for free???

Maybe it’s counter-intuitive to some.  To me it’s the most intuitive thing in the world.  Cry Sanctuary is the first book in a series.  Maybe there are a lot of people out there who might not have otherwise taken a chance on it, and some fraction of them will download it, read it, and enjoy it enough to buy the next one. (Or two.  Or three.)  Maybe some of those people will want to try our other books.

I don’t have numbers.  I won’t have numbers until September, most likely.  What I do have is NovelRank.  (If you’re an author unfamiliar with this site, I apologize in advance. Or you’re welcome.  You know, depending on which side of OCD you fall on.*)

For me, I was fascinated with the potential of NovelRank, because it saves the ranking of your kindle book every hour and makes a pretty graph.  “Aha!” I exclaimed back in April.  “Now I will have pretty pictures when the time comes for Cry Sanctuary to be free!  I will be able to show the world that I am not crazy!”

Obviously 3 books is not exactly a stunning statistical blow, but I think it would be hard to claim this as coincidence.  So for your entertainment, I present a graph of Amazon sales ranks on books #2-#4 of the Red Rock Pass series.  (NovelRank freaks out and dies when a book switches over to the freebie bestseller list, so there is no graph for book #1.)

When looking at these, remember that low ranks = good ranks.

Magical proof? Maybe not. Pretty visually impressive?  Well, I certainly think so.  Plus, Cry Sanctuary came out in October of 2008.  Even Sanctuary Lost is over a year old.  In ebook terms, by the old standards, that would be over the hill.  (Sanctuary Lost actually sold as many copies on kindle in March as it did during its release month, but that’s a different blog post.)  Obviously the freebie revitalized the rankings on two older titles, and kept Sanctuary Unbound‘s release month stretch chugging on a little while longer.

Free is not the enemy.  Some people who get your free book will hate it.  Some will never buy anything else you write, ever.  Some will never read it.  Some will read it and think, “meh.”  You may have lost a few potential sales with some of them.  But really, in the long run, I truly believe you’re likely to have gained so much more.

I’ve still got another week of Cry Sanctuary being free.  Maybe we’ve bottomed out in the rankings.  Maybe more people will buy the other books next week.  At the end of June I’ll post the graphs for the month and see what it looks like on the whole.  Either way it’s interesting.  And cool.

I love this brave new world of ebooks.  And I love giving stuff away for free.

So, tell me.  Has free ever worked for you?  Have you ever gotten a free book and gone on to purchase more from that author?  (Or, alternately, you can tell me if you got a free book and never tried that author again, but I’d prefer you leave out the specifics of who.  This is not the forum for a negativity fiesta.)

*NovelRank provides kindle sales estimates with their tracking, but I can tell you right now, both from personal experience and from my real time amazon numbers I get from self-publishing some titles, that these sales estimates are only accurate when you sell fewer than a few copies a day, and are often VERY wrong on books ranked consistently under 1,000.  I am not responsible for any sales estimate induced panic! (The site disclaims this quite clearly as well, but sometimes people don’t read disclaimers.  Of course, you’re not one of those, are you? I didn’t think so.)

Yaaaay, today I am very excited! I talk a lot about how I love giving books away, and for the next two weeks I get to see just how many I can unload.  Anyone willing to sign up with an account at Amazon or Barnes & Noble can download the first book in the Red Rock Pass series for free!

This does not mean that only those with a Nook or Kindle can read it, though.  Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble offer a variety of ways to read the ebooks you download through their websites.

Then, because I have the attention span of a kitten, I forgot about it until Viv Arend and I were chatting about upcoming books at Samhain and she mentioned she had an ARC of Before the Storm, after which I was all OMGOMGYESTHATBOOK! I snatched it up the day it went on sale and devoured it with great glee.  It is such a wonderfully unique fantasy set in a vivid world with strong, incredible characters, and now I have to share!

So not only did I pester poor Marian Perera into an interview, but I’m going to buy another copy of her book and give it away to someone who likes steamy romance and steampunky fantasy.

Welcome Marian to the madness!  (And she put up with my new favorite questions so very, very willingly. Gotta love it. )

1) Tell us all a little bit about Before the Storm.

Steam engines. Steamier romance.

That’s as little as I can get.

Before the Storm is the story of two people: Robert and Alex, a baron and a mare – a woman kept for the nobility’s use. Robert rules one of the last remaining free provinces, but the tyrant who dominates the rest of the land gives Alex to him as an gift. The Black Mare, as she’s called, is unwelcome as well as unexpected, since Robert has good reason to believe she’s an assassin. She’s something more dangerous, though. Unless he can turn her sharp mind and unbreakable spirit to his side, to stand with him in a war where steam engines clash with magic.

2) Describe your hero and heroine in one word each.

Alex would be stone. Warm as granite and soft as slate. On the other hand, you don’t want a wall of sand at your back when you’re in difficulty.

Robert would be sun. That’s usually taken for granted, but given time enough it can melt an iceberg.

3) What’s the story behind the story?  And can we expect more stories?  (The blurb says trilogy!)

Oh, absolutely! I love writing, and I love the world of Eden.

During the Fire is next, and it’s about Mayerd, who serves as the captain of Robert’s guard. His past catches up with him when a hunter called Jeyn arrives from his homeland, Iternum, and forces him to stand trial. Just leaving Iternum without sanction carries a death penalty, so everything else he’s done is more than enough for execution. And when he and Jeyn work together to uncover the truth behind one of his crimes, that only attracts the attention of the person responsible – someone who’s far more magically skilled than either of them.

As for what’s behind the story, I’m studying to be a medical laboratory technologist and I’m a product of three cultures. So all my fantasy manuscripts have science as well as racial or cultural clashes. But I’m a softie for romance and happy endings as well.

4) Now for the important questions. Anne Scott. Awesome editor, or awesomest editor?

I hoped my editor would be someone who enjoyed my book and worked meticulously to make it as good as possible. I found that my editor was also someone who responded incredibly fast and shared my vision of what the sequel should be. She’s excellent!

5) Soon you’ll be an ebook author. Are you worried that you’re contributing to the eventual fall of civilization at the hands of the robot overlords?

That’s a fall?

Sorry. I write Transformers fanfics.

6) Some say the world will end in robots, some say in zombies. Which do you think it will be?

Robots. Less mess that way. Fewer entrails.

7) Finally, the greatest question of our time: Caveman vs Astronaut. Who would win in a fight?

Astronaut. Unless this is one of those 2001: A Space Odyssey things where the caveman turns into the astronaut?
