Behind Witches

Owen doesn’t believe in magic. But it believes in him…

A few readers of mine have emailed and asked what the inspiration behind Witches is. Well, that’s kind of complicated…but I’ll try to do my best to explain.

For a long time, I had an image in my head. That image was of Owen, smoking a cigarette, and watching the darkness in front of him expectantly.

I had no idea what would be coming out of the darkness, but I knew that it would be something not of this world, something that came from another realm.

When I finally sat down to write the story, it seemed so natural that Owen would see Witches, that he would be the only mortal who could see them. What I needed to do was figure out why.

As I wrote Witches, I realized that I was really writing the first book in a series. I also knew that I was exploring dark themes: Death, love, lust. I knew that the story held power for me because it was about what I am: a writer.

Owen discovers that writing is magic, that he is a protector of the Realms, that he is a Storyteller.

I knew as I wrote more and more of the novel that words would play a bigger role as the story developed and moved forward.

When I finished writing Witches, I felt as if I had started on a great quest, a long journey. I can’t see the ending yet but I know that there are two more adventures, two more books, in The Written Word series.

I can only hope that Owen is strong enough to survive the darkness that awaits him…

Thanks for sharing this glimpse with us. Owen sounds like a fantastic character – and not just because I love that name. :)

wotks on a nicotine compound that consists of nothing but nicotine. Virtually no poisons whatsoever. They’ve pretty much changed my life. Getting rid of inhaling and exhaling smelly smoke feels wonderful to me!
