From Dee
I was voted most likely to be a serial killer when I grew up. Is it really any wonder why Halloween is my second favorite holiday after Christmas? (C’mon. Cut me some slack…you can’t beat a holiday where people give you stuff.)
I’m not even kidding about the serial killer thing. I’ve always been a voracious reader. Up until age sixteen, if the book’s cover wasn’t glossy black with a picture of some demon, demonic representation, something gory or just downright evil, I didn’t read it. Period. I was reading the likes of Stephen King and Dean Koontz while others my age were absorbed by Judy Blume. My teachers were concerned, my conservative parents, horrified and my friends, mystified. I’ve always walked to the beat of my own drum, so this was no different.
Damn the hormones, around age sixteen I discovered romances. What a leap, huh? I found myself swept away by purple prose, bodice rippers and the like. Something about them absolutely fascinated me. But you know what happened after that? I discovered romances that revolved around demons…demonic representations…something gory and/or downright evil. Hog heaven, I tell you.
When I wrote Soldier, I knew I wanted a dark story where I got to kill my hero. I didn’t know how the story would end up being a romance after that. My main concern was finding a way to off him but still end up with a happily ever after ending. Well, I did it. Right in chapter one — adios, hero. (If you don’t believe me, go read the excerpt.) But the journey to the end is a roller coaster of suspense and the trials of Nicholas and Anna worth every nail biting moment.
What? Don’t believe me again? Go read the book. You won’t be disappointed.
Oh yeah. Happy Halloween!
Dee
