CONTEST: Win an eARC of Darkness at Dawn by Devin Harnois
I’ve known Devin Harnois for a while. And by “a while” I mean…oh, 5 or 6 internet years, which is like 20 years offline. (We all know that internet time moves really fast, right? In internet time, I’ve known Donna longer than I’ve been alive.) When I heard about the contract for Darkness at Dawn I was really excited, because we also all know that I love Samhain, and I really love seeing my friends getting to publish there. (One of my other long time friends recently snuck her way into Sasha Knight’s steampunk anthology…so excited!)
Devin writes urban fantasy with a twist of romance and a little bit of naughty loving. I had the pleasure of reading Darkness at Dawn early, and now I get the bonus pleasure of giving someone else the same chance! This is a short story that I think has enough resolution for the romantics out there, but enough action for the urban fantasy fans. Want to know more?

Letting her live was bad enough. Wanting her is much worse.
Richard Everson has seen too many people die, killed by the nightmare creatures that have overrun the world. Every night he leaves the protection of the walled city to hunt the nasties alone. He likes his job. Maybe a little too much.
By day, Jennifer lives in her human skin. By night, the wolf takes over, a legacy forced upon her by the nasties who made her one of them. Everson is a tenuous link to what’s left of the human world. Despite the danger to them both, she hungers for his touch.
Each encounter sends the heat spiraling higher, until it burns away all control. And Richard realizes too late his heart has crossed a line punishable by death…
Warning: This book contains strong language, nightmarish creatures, a violence-loving hero, a very naked woman, werewolves, forbidden desire, and post-apocalyptic monster-killing mayhem.
So…who wants to read about a badass soldier shooting nasties after the end of the world? For your chance to win, tell me what about the blurb makes you most want to read this story. (Me? Who doesn’t love a loner hero who likes killing monsters more than is healthy?)

ME ME ME ME *Waves arms widly*
I have to say the “post-apocalyptic monster-killing mayhem” really does it for me!
That’s my favorite part of the blurb too.
that line And Richard realizes too late his heart has crossed a line punishable by death…
and the fact that you say he’s a little too happy to kill the nasties rofl. I love me some violent men as long as it not coming my way. That being the case I would have to get violet myself.
This line…right here: “Despite the danger to them both, she hungers for his touch.” That’s when you had me.
I would have to go with —”He likes his job. Maybe a little too much.”
Best tag line: Everson is a tenuous link to what’s left of the human world. Despite the danger to them both, she hungers for his touch. (I like the idea of him being the only thing for her that makes her feel human.)
And one line that I could do without: Letting her live was bad enough. Wanting her is much worse. (I just thought it was cheesy.)
From the warning, I like the two phrases: a violence-loving hero and post-apocalyptic monster-killing mayhem.
Yay for violence and killing! (in fiction, of course)
Oh, squee!
I’m with MinnChica.
“post-apocalyptic monster-killing mayhem” does it for me, too!
Congrats to Devin. Can’t wait to read!
woo-hoo, another fan of my favorite bit
Must say it is this line “Letting her live was bad enough. Wanting her is much worse.” Just hints at the inner fight that is going to happen.

I love the sound of this one! Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy
If you’d like to enter, make sure you answer the question!
The violence-loving hero does it for me.
The part that makes me want to read … oh, wait. That’s my book!;)
I like this part of the excerpt, this is what grabbed me.
By day, Jennifer lives in her human skin. By night, the wolf takes over, a legacy forced upon her by the nasties who made her one of them. Everson is a tenuous link to what’s left of the human world. Despite the danger to them both, she hungers for his touch.
My favorite is: “Richard realizes too late his heart has crossed a line punishable by death…”
I have to tell you that first powerful sentence made me shiver “Letting her live was bad enough.” I was immediately intrigued what she must have committed that he regrets not having killed her.
Then that ending line “And Richard realizes too late his heart has crossed a line punishable by death…” so powerful, the shivers are back!
I want to read this one! Pretty please!!
The blurb sounds very intriguing
I love stories like this, where two people who are on the opposite sides of an issue/war/whatever fall in love despite what initially seem to be irreconcilable differences. Favorite lines from the blurb: “Despite the danger to them both, she hungers for his touch. Each encounter sends the heat spiraling higher, until it burns away all control. And Richard realizes too late his heart has crossed a line punishable by death…”
Post apocalypse worlds always draw me in, so a book set there is good. What makes it irrisitable is the monster killing hero and the reluctant monster heroine added to the mix.
The line that really got me was “By night, the wolf takes over, a legacy forced upon her by the nasties who made her one of them.”
Letting her live was bad enough. Wanting her is much worse.
Soundsa like a war between his head/mind and heart.
“Letting her live was bad enough. Wanting her is much worse ” This just intrigues me to want to find out more. Some of my favorite books hooked me with their tag line before I even read the back cover.
I’ve been purchasing from Samhain for a few years now, and I usually skip right down to the bottom to see what the disclaimer (or warning) says. That can pique my interest enough that the actual blurb is just icing.
‘nightmarish creatures, a violence-loving hero…werewolves, forbidden desire. I’m in!
Always wondered how the authors came up with those…
Writing the warning was the most fun.
Every one loves hot smexin’ but I wanna see what those nightmare monsters look like! That’s glimpse inside the author’s head!
My head is a scary, scary place!
He lines his job a little too much got me too. He seems like a great alpha male
‘Each encounter sends the heat spiraling higher, until it burns away all control..’ lots of tension.. : )
Always love the warnings.. they are the best. Sometimes I just read the warning, not the blurb..lol
Thanks for the chance to try a new author
OMG, what about the blurb DOESN’T make me want to read this?!
If I had to choose just one element, it’s the post-apocalyptic setting. I’m such a sucker for action unfolding in desolate, end-of-the-world settings. It ups the stakes of every event and action.
I like the loner hero monster killer angle and the fact that the heroine might be considered a “monster”.
“By day, Jennifer lives in her human skin.”
Enough said, it’s about me.
Bwah ha ha ha Big strong men killing bad guys and strong women kicking their butts…I likey….
