Snippet Saturday: The Prologue

Snippet Saturday

Today’s theme: Prologues! I think we only have one published book with an actual prologue, and that’s Crux. I’ve featured a lot of Crux snippets, though, and the prologue for Crux is available on the Samhain website and a bunch of other places too. So I’m picking something different!

In September our second Temple of Luna story is due out, and it’s a bit of an odd one. The hero spends the first chapter or two of the story in a state where he can’t actually think very clearly. Instead of having his POV to start, there’s a tiny little almost-but-not-quite prologue. And this really is a snippet: 126 words.

So enjoy our tiniest snippet yet!

Snippet from Temple of Luna #2

He doesn’t remember his name.

He remembers blood, and the men who spilled it. Dozens, hundreds, a river of life flowing into death.  He remembers the screams, hardened men with mangled limbs and the sure knowledge of their own mortality in their voices.  He remembers guns and bombs and the ways humans kill their kind, cold metal tearing through flesh and machines crushing their bones.

He remembers pain.  He remembers death. But he doesn’t remember his name.

He doesn’t remember her name, either.  Words are jumbles of sounds that hurt his throat anyway, but her name…  Her name would taste like peace.  Would feel as good on his tongue as the pleasure that heats his body every time he catches her scent.  Soft.  Female. Familiar.

Mine.

Well, that was over quickly, wasn’t it?  I think maybe it’s time to check out some other prologues: Sylvia Day, Shelley Munro, Jaci Burton, Michelle Pillow, Juliana Stone, Moira Rogers , Sasha White, TJ Michaels, Lacey Savage, Jody Wallace , Eliza Gayle , Kelly Maher , Taige Crenshaw, Beth Williamson, Beth Kery, Mandy Roth, Viv Arend
