Contest: Big Bad Maine Extravaganza

October 27th is drawing close, and do you know what happens on October 27th?

Trick question! Two things happen on October 27th!  Not only do Donna and I get to celebrate the release of Sanctuary’s Price, Double the Fun in Books!book three in the Red Rock Pass series, but our twitter buddy Nicole Peeler gets to party hard for her debut novel Tempest Rising, the first in her Jane True series.  And what do these books have in common aside from the clear twitter addiction of their authors?

They’re both at least partially set in Maine!

Okay, I may be more excited than I should be about this, but I have good reason.  Though I make my home in the sweltering South these days, I’m a Mainer born and bred.  So this seemed like a perfect opportunity to celebrate all Maine has to offer–or at least all it has to offer in small, travel sized packages.  In that token we bring you…

Big Bad Maine Extravaganza

Prize Basket

That’s right! A glorious bounty of Maine related gifts are yours for the winning (and some that aren’t pictured!)  Here’s your chance to win an array of souvenirs from the great state of Maine, along with an autographed ARC of Tempest Rising and an autographed copy of our collection of free promotional reads, something we only break out for special occasions! And of course, there’s swag to be had for both authors, and best of all your very own $25 gift certificate to Sojourn Curiosities, where you can order your own custom made piece of jewelry crafted from items found on the coast of Maine!  (I will be profiling this awesome artist later in the week, so stick around to see examples of her work!)

How do you enter?  Leave us a comment!  And for additional chances to win come back all week long and enter the various contests we’ll be having every day.  Every contest you enter this week on the blog is one more entry in this contest!  All winners for all contests will be announced on October 26th!  And if you’d be so kind as to share this graphic…well, we’d love you forever.

So for today’s entry, I have a question for you based on our respective book subjects.  So tell us, dear readers…who would win in a steel cage match?  A selkie or a werewolf?

(It should be mentioned here that failure to answer the question or leave a comment that indicates you read the question at all will probably result in disqualification.)

Comments

  1. I’m waiting for those books to come out!!! Yay
This is an awesome contest… i’m thinking that the werewolf would win, because well we’re talking WEREWOLF here…and also because i don’t know much about Selkies except that their element is water.
Maybe if the fight was happening in a pool i’d give my vote to the Selkie. ;)

  2. I am going to say a selkie since all the werewolf has to do is rip the selkies skin off an they’d be at a disadvantage more so if this was on land and not in the water. if this was the sea or ocean the selkie might win but I doubt it. I’d think werewolves werer stronger since they are bigger and more mucular. swimming uses different muscles.

  3. I definitely think the werewolf would win. Maybe I think that just because I am partial to werewolves and have an image of how they are. And with Selkies they are not featured to often in books I have read.

  4. Breia Brickey says:

I think in a steel cage the werewolf would win. I can’t to read these books, thanks for a cool contest.

  5. Breia Brickey says:

Well my typing is really bad, should read I can’t wait to read these books..Sorry. *g*

  6. There are a lot of caveats to this contest. Are either possessed of super speed/strength/perceptions in their human form? This complicates the question. Where is the location of this battle? This complicates the question. What is the relative fitness level and martial knowledge of each participant?

Overall, though, assuming neither species has super abilities as humans and that the battle is on land (as cage match would appear to indicate), I’d say a werewolf would win. A selkie’s power is, to me, more specialized and not something that clearly lends a combat advantage. In contrast, a werewolf tends to be less limited in their shapeshifting and tend to have a powerful combat advantage in the use of said shifting. Assuming no distinctly biasing factors such as one participant having additional arms or being possessed of knowledge of a martial art or something, I’d call werewolf.

  7. Wow, good question. I’m going with a werewolf. I’m really trying not to think about any skin ripping though. That would just be wrong:)

  8. Cool contest. And the werewolf would totally win.

  9. Thanks for the great contest (I’ve put the graphic on my blog)!
My bets are on the werevolf :)

  10. Lindsey Ekland says:

I to think a werewolf would win. Though I want to know why they think they need to fight.

  11. I would go with the werewolf. A steel cage would be on land and that is more their domain than a selkie

  12. Watch out Steve King …..

  13. Wow! Everybodys argument for the werewolf is right on the money. I cant help feeling like its a trick question, especially since I dont know all that much about selkies. However, I am going to put my money (in this case the contest prize… :o ) ) on the werewolf. Even in human form, in most cases, the wolf would be so strong….yeah, lets go with the wolfie! Thanks for the chance for a great prize…

    johanna

  14. I am going with the unknown.. Selkie. The werewolf are strong but little is known about the Selkie. So that’s my choice. ;0)

    Veronica

  15. I am so in! I’ve always wanted to move to Maine (no reasons why!) because like you, I live in the South and good god, it gets hot!

Anyway – to answer your question, I first said the werewolf but then I don’t know how selkies fight, maybe they do very aggressively or he could just drown the werewolf!.. Right? See? I don’t know! So I’m going with selkie! :)

  16. Natasha A. says:

Um. Hmm. Well, I don’t know much about Selkie’s. The only one I have encountered in Literature was LKH’s Merry Gentry series.

I think I have to go with werewolf. They are just so much more vicious. Now, if the Selkie possesses magic, it may be a bit more balanced, battle wise :)

  17. Melissa Conatser says:

Well, I have to go with everyone else. I think that a werewolf could easily beat a selkie.

    Melissa

  18. Love your prizes. My vote goes to the werewolf too. A trapped werewolf can be pretty viscious, and if he senses a threat, he won’t stop fighting until the threat is destroyed.

  19. I have to go with a werewolf. While a selkie would probably put up a good fight, I have to side with the werewolf winning a cage match.

Maine is one of the few states I haven’t yet gotten to, but it is at the top of the list of those left to visit.

  20. Sarah Ulfers says:

The werewolf would win. I dont see selkies as that ruthless.

  21. I say the Werewolf would win.

  22. Barbara Elness says:

I think I’m with most everyone else – I think the werewolf would win since they seem like a more badass creature.

  23. Kimberley C says:

What a great contest! I just love Maine!

I would have to choose the Werewolf…just because he is in his natural element on land (and cage hehehe).

  24. Nancy Gilliland says:

In a steel cage match, the werewolf would win (unless the steel cage wason water, then the selkie has the advantage) Can’t wait for the releases.

  25. Definitely a werewolf with it’s fangs and claws unless the cage was underwater.

  26. Debby Creager says:

I am sure most people will agree that a werewolf would win in that fight because the selkie would be out of his element. I would hate to see that fight though.

  27. A werewolf!!! I can’t see how it couldn’t possibly win, they are just so strong, and crazy sometimes!

  28. Thanks for the great contest!

I will have to go with a werewolf since they know how to fight with teeth and claws and it’s more in their element.

  29. Channon Valentine says:

OMG!!! Loved the first book of this series and really have to get the others. If I win this contest that would be awsome.

My answer to your question is WEREWOLF hands down! To me they are the stronger of the two on land. Now if they were in water that would be another story altogether. Selkies can fight there and wolves cannot.

    Congrats on all your success!!!!!

  30. Vicki Wurgler says:

In a steel cage I have to think it would be the werewolf-I think he would have the fierce strength that the selkie doesn’t.

  31. Hmmm. I have a very limited knowlege base of selkies, so I will have to go with werewolves. They are pretty darn scary anyways.

I posted you pic on myspace.

  32. Even though Selkies are reported to be able to transform into human form, I say the Werewolf would do it in a steel cage.
    yourstrulee(at)sasktel(dot)net

  33. I think they werewolf would win. I mean, can you picture the little mermaid fighting anyone? lol

    Deidre

  34. Mary Preston says:

Werewolf all the way. Big, bad & bodacious.

  35. Wow what an amazing prize!!! The books sound awesome too and I am in desperate need of new reading material. ;) hehe As for the question I’m not too familiar w/ selkies but even if I were I think the werewolf would win mainly b/c of their brute strength for one thing. I’d definitely think it would be an interesting match to see! And I’m curious how you came up w/ the question?! lol

    ~Sha~

  36. A werewolf would win in the steel cage incident.

A selkie turns to human form but the werewolf would be stronger.

    yourstrulee(at)sasktel(dot)net

  37. Angela Drane says:

I think the werewolf would kick some selkie butt!

  38. Beverly G says:

humm good question i think a were would kick a selkies rear but it would be a good fight

  39. Anna Shah Hoque says:

I’m going to say werewolf because I’m a huge werewolf fan. I wish all of you the best of luck with your upcoming releases!!! It sounds like it’s going to be insanely fun with all the events y’all will be hosting!!!

    Happy Reading!!!
    Anna Shah Hoque

  40. Yipes, I think barring additional super powers, I’d go with the werewolf, but I can’t bear to think of the devastation… Selkies are pretty intriguing as shifters go! Eeek!

  41. It would depend on where the cage is. In water and I would bet on the Selkie but on land I would bet on the Werewolf. However if I had my druthers I wouldn’t have them fight at all as I like both these shapeshifters.

  42. I would say that a werewolf would win in a cage match. I’m very excited for Sanctuary ‘s Price to be coming out. I loved the two before it and can’t wait to get this one.
    lexeetoste at sbcglobal.net

  43. Much to my embarrassment, I don’t know what a selkie is. So, I’m going to say werewolf!!!

    Thanks!

  44. Since I don’t know a great deal about selkies I’m going to have to go with werewolves!

  45. jennifer mathis says:

I’m going with the selkies. I think maybe they are more cunning

  46. Is a killer selkie like a killer bunny? Hmm. I still have to say the werewolf will be the winner in this match.

  47. The werewolf would win. Awesome contest!

  48. I’m voting for the Werewolf, unless in water, but anywhere else, he is kicking some serious butt. T.

  49. I’m going to have to vote for the Werewolf. Plus the contest looks really cool.

  50. I’ll have to vote for the Werewolf to win in a caged fight although I <3 Selkies!

Fabulous prizes. Do I get an extra entry for being from Maine?? :P

    e.j.stevens.author [at] gmail [dot] com

  51. I’d have to say a werewolf would win, but that’s only because I don’t know much about selkies. However, since I do know about selkies and water, the werewolf would need to stay away from the water to be sure of the win.

  52. Jeanette Jackson says:

I think a werewolf would win

  53. The werewolf would win! And it would be a big, nasty, hairy fight!

  54. The werewolf would win but the fight would be really close… bloody and lots of futteral noises – If you close your eyes and listen it might even sound like something else ;) naughty wink;)

  55. I love werewolf stories.

  56. A werewolf would win hands down. They are just too mean and the selkie would not have a chance to defeat the werewolf.
Thank you so much for the great contest. I have never been to Maine and would love to have a taste of it with the great gifts.

  57. AS much as I love seals, I’m thinking that they don’t have a chance against a werewolf. I’m really excited to learn about them in Nicole’s book…but I’m thinking it would need to be like a 10 foot selkie to have a chance.

I must say this is a totally awesome prize back…books and jewlery, what more could a girl want.

  58. Teresa B. says:

Aww, think I’m too late for the contest but, I think the big bad werewolf. I’d be happy to nurse the poor selkie back to health though.

  59. It would depend on if the cage was above ground or under water! Still, advantage to the werewolf if it’s above ground since it would just need to rip the selkie’s skin off to gain a major advantage. I look forward to the books! I lived in Maine for a few years and loved it!
